JESUS AND STOICISM
Holy scripture, Seneca!
We were thrilled and privileged to get an advance copy of Brittany Polat’s terrific new book, “Jesus & Stoicism: The Parallel Sayings.” We knew about some of the connections between early Christianity and the Stoics, but it’s fascinating to see the Evangelists and the Stoic heavy hitters side by side, how they agree, and how they differ. Our favorite pairing:
Don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own trouble is enough.
Matthew 6.34
Do not let the future disturb you, for you will come to it, if necessary, bringing with you the same reason that you now use to deal with the present.
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 7.8
“Jesus & Stoicism” is published March 17, but if you’re interested, please pre-order now—it really helps authors!
